REPAIRING LARGE DENTS AND CREASES

  • Place the door in a horizontal position, dents face up, on a padded table or stable saw horses.

  • Sand the dented or creased area with #80 course sandpaper using your power sander.  Be sure to sand door within an approximate 6" diameter of the dent area.  Make sure to remove all the paint within this area, especially making sure the dent itself is free from paint.  NOTE:  POLYESTER RESIN WILL NOT ADHERE TO PAINTED SURFACES.

  • Clean the sanded area with the tack cloth or damp cloth.  DO NOT USE SOLVENTS, NAPHTHA OR TURPENTINE.

  • Mix the polyester resin with the hardening agent on the mixing board.  Be sure to follow manufacturer's instructions on the container.

  • Using the putty knife, apply the polyester resin mixture over the dent, making certain to feather out beyond the dent area.  Do not crown or create a bump over the dent.  Fill and feather as needed.

  • Allow to dry.

  • Sand entire filled area with #80 course sandpaper using your power sander until surface is flat and smooth.  Finish sanding with #150 to #300 fine grit sandpaper in hand sanding block.  Using a clean dry cloth, wipe off excessive dust.

  • Spray sanded area with Castlegate prime paint.  Apply a fine, even coat and avoid oversparing.

  • Use lacquer putty to spot fill all air holes, sanding marks, and imperfections.  Apply as thin a layer of material as possible.

  • Finish sanding with #150 to #300 fine grit sandpaper in hand sanding block.  Clean entire refinished area with tack cloth or damp cloth.  Do not use solvents, naphtha or turpentines.  Allow to dry.  Apply a fine, even coat of primer and avoid overspraying.
